Colitis & Diverticulitis Symptoms

Colitis and diverticulitis are two chronic intestinal disorders that have similar symptoms. They both affect the colon (large intestines). Colitis is an inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and rectum. Diverticulitis occurs when the diverticula (small pouches) develop in the colon and become infected and rupture. There are several Colitis and Diverticulitis symptoms.

Pain

Abdominal pain occurs usually on the left side of the abdomen. The pain may be mild or severe depending on the severity of the condition.

Cramping/Bloating

Cramping and bloating are characteristic symptoms of both Colitis and Diverticulitis. These symptoms occur mostly on the left side of the abdomen.

Diarrhea

Frequent loose, watery stools that may contain blood is another common symptom of both of these conditions.

Spasms

Spasms are due to the severe abdominal pain that aggravates the abdominal muscles.

Fever

Fever and chills occur in Colitis due to the inflammation in the inner lining of the colon. Fever occurs in Diverticulitis because of the ruptured, infected pouches.
