Daniel Food Diet

The Daniel food diet is the diet used by Daniel, a character in the Bible. Daniel, a young Jewish man, was taken into captivity and held as a prisoner of war. Daniel's keepers attempted to force him to eat foods of their native land. Daniel stuck to his own diet instead. After 10 days of eating his foods, Daniel's captors compared him to the other slaves and found that he was healthier than the others.

Vegetables

The Daniel food diet is basically a vegan diet. It is virtually fat-free and restrictive in nature. Vegetables play a large part of the required eating. Some popular vegetables to eat with this diet include broccoli, artichokes, asparagus and corn. Root vegetables like squash, potatoes, carrots and turnips are also part of this diet. The way these vegetables are cooked are just as important. You must avoid frying and sauteing in too much oil. Raw vegetables are best, but steaming and boiling are also okay. Seasonings like garlic and onions are tasty ways to spice up these veggies.

Other Foods

The second-largest portion of foods that can be consumed with this diet is fruits. You can eat fresh fruits like apples, pears and pineapples fresh. Other fruits you can eat on this diet include lemon, lime, raisins, plums and apricots.

Besides fruit, Daniel dieters can eat certain types of legumes and peas, such as lentils, chick peas, black eyed peas, dried lima beans, navy and pinto beans. Boil these without meat flavorings. You can also eat brown rice and nuts, which provide protein.

Drink pure water and 100 percent fruit juice. Avoid fruit juices labeled "fruit drinks"--these are heavy on sugars and other ingredients that are restricted on this diet.

Extras

Like most diets, this one includes a substantial list of things you can't eat. Processed foods are a big no-no. On the Daniel food diet, you should avoid all meats, white flour, white sugar, alcoholic drinks, sugar and even sugar substitutes. You can't have excess oils, so deep-fried anything is out of the question. Margarine and shortening are off limits too. People on this diet may experience headaches or dizziness during the first couple of days as their body makes chemical adjustments.
