How to Lose Weight With Breakfast Smoothies

Eating a healthy breakfast has several benefits, including weight loss. Bob Greene outlines in his book, "The Best Life Diet" that eating breakfast improves metabolism and wards off hunger pangs later in the day. Breakfast including healthy foods like fruits is especially beneficial, as fruit contains other nutrients like antioxidants and fiber.

Instructions

    1

Replace your current breakfast with smoothies. Adding a smoothie on top of a breakfast of bacon and eggs will only result in consuming more calories, and therefore will cause you to gain weight. Additional foods like nuts can pair well with smoothies, but avoid fried foods for breakfast like hash browns, sausage and bacon.

    2

Choose fruit you enjoy. Drinking a smoothie must be an enjoyable activity in order for it to be sustainable. Thus, if you do not like apples, do not add it into the smoothie. Make a list of all fruits you enjoy, and purchase only those for smoothies.

    3

Experiment with various recipes. Many smoothie recipes have interchangeable ingredients. Apples are easily substituted by pears, grapefruits can be replaced by oranges, and strawberries can make a recipe taste better than blackberries. Do not feel compelled to follow recipes verbatim, especially if you do not like the ingredients. Experimentation can make the smoothie process more enjoyable, tastier, and therefore more sustainable.

    4

Watch quantity of ingredients. Smoothies can add calories and grams of sugar very quickly. Though eating 2 oranges, a pint of blueberries, and a quarter of a pineapple could take an hour to eat, this amount of food in a smoothie could take just 15 minutes to drink. Therefore, watch the quantity of food added.

    5

Add some ingredients in moderation. Peanut butter, milk, bananas and cocoa powder can create a delicious smoothie. Peanut butter, however, is high in fat and its quantity should be limited in smoothies. Whole milk is another ingredient that contains vitamin D and calcium, but is also high in fat and cholesterol. Opt for smoothies that are primarily fruit-based for optimal nutrition.

    6

Consider creative additives. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Smoothies" suggests many healthy, unconventional ingredients to enhance smoothies. Silken tofu, for example, can serve as a thickener without compromising the taste. Tofu is also low in calories, making it a good choice for weight loss. Coconut milk adds calories and fat, but adds a creamy texture and omega fatty acids. Almond milk, tahini, and pudding are a few additional ideas.
