About Science Diet for Cats

Science Diet is a popular brand of pet food with a variety of formulas to suit both dogs and cats. The brand's cat food line alone has about 45 different varieties for your cat's particular needs. While the choices may seem overwhelming, the formulas are pretty self-explanatory, making it simple to pick the one that's best for your feline friend.

Ages and Types

Science Diet food is tailored for cats of all ages. These include a line of food for kitten, ideal for the first year; adult, ideal for cats between the ages of 1 to 6 years old; and mature adult, good for cats that are 7-years-old and older. The food comes in both dry and canned varieties, with the latter available in several different flavors.

Formulas

If age group and food type is not enough of a selection, Science Diet for cats also come in a number of different formulas. Kitten formulas include the traditional indoor variety and one for healthy development. Adult cat formulas include the traditional indoor formula, light food for weight control, a hairball control, sensitive skin, sensitive skin, oral care and Optimal Care, aimed at maintaining vital organs and lean muscle mass. Mature adult formulas include hairball control, the traditional indoor food and a variety for the active older cat. Kitten and adult cat foods also include a Science Diet variety called Nature's Best, which contains real chicken, vegetables and fruits.

Company

Science Diet for cats is just one of the products created by Hill's Pet Nutrition. The company, which started its pet food lines in 1939, also produces a line of dog foods and special Prescription Diet foods for pets. The Prescription Diets, available only through a veterinarian, are for pets experiencing health issues, like bladder or kidney problems, skin conditions or recovering from illness or injury.

Cost

The price of Science Diet for cats depends on the type and size of the food. Dry food comes in three sizes and averages $14 for the 3.5 pound bag; $28 for the 8.5 pound bag and $47 for the 17.5 pound bag, according to prices in 2010. Canned food runs about $18 for case of 24 cans, based on prices in 2010.

Purchasing

You can buy Science Diet for cats at a number of different locations. Major pet store chains carry the brand as do some veterinarian offices. Not every store will have every single formula, but you may be able to call and request a nearby retailer stock the specific formula you need if they don't already carry it. You can also order Science Diet for cats from a number of online retailers, although not through the Science Diet website.
